A self-led journey back to the beginning
A self-led journey back to the beginning
I’m an Austin artist whose work is driven by an ongoing conversation with the canvas. Returning to my practice after 20 years, I found that my earlier surrealist tendencies had dissolved into a more instinctive abstraction. I no longer feel the need to depict recognizable forms. Instead, I let my inner guide — a curious rabbit that lives somewhere between intuition and impulse — lead me toward each next moment.
My process begins in quiet attention. I listen to what the paint wants, letting color nudge line, letting a single mark provoke a response. Light and dark negotiate with each other, sometimes politely, sometimes not. Questions rise, answers appear sideways, and the surface becomes a living dialogue rather than a plan. At a certain point, the painting shifts and I’m no longer just looking at the work, the work begins to look back. That meeting is the moment I live for.
Each piece becomes an exploration of presence, curiosity, and trust in the unknown. I hope the work offers viewers the same invitation it gives me: to pause, to listen, and to step into the small, electric space where a mark becomes meaning.
